 A hometown effort

The Omaha World-Herald said "Wealth transfers in Nebraska are a key to the future of rural communities" in its February 11, 2007 editorial. With all the maneuvering of special interests to get some private gain out of the tax code, it's refreshing to see something that can help us all.

It'll cost us Nebraskans maybe $2.5 million in state revenue a year, but it's worth a try.

New tax credit may help rural Nebraska

This is what often happens when someone dies in a rural community: The relatives come in for the funeral. Then they go to the bank, pull all the assets out and take them out of town.

A new charitable tax incentive is intended to help keep some of this money in Nebraska, according to state Sen. Matt Connealy of Decatur.

State senators supported the tax incentive after hearing stories like this during public hearings, said Connealy, sponsor of the new law.

Governor Signs Corrective Legislation - Nebraska Charitable Tax Credit Now Available With Federal Deduction

Legislative Bill 1010, corrective legislation designed to alter the charitable tax credit provided by Legislative Bill 28 signed into law last year, was signed into law by Governor Heineman on April 12, 2006. Click here to read the full article.

Governor's Column, "Giving for the Future"

Governor Dave Heineman signed the Legislation creating the Nebraska Charitable Tax Credit on June 6, 2005.  He conducted ceremonial bill signings in McCook, Ord, Grand Island, Lincoln and Omaha that summer, and devoted his September 19, 2005 weekly newspaper column to EndowNebraska and the new tax credit.

"The Endow Nebraska Act, LB 28, was created to provide the charitable organizations dedicated to community improvements, strengthening local schools and higher education institutions and providing support for those in need with the funding needed to encourage continued involvement in Nebraska's communities,"  the Governor wrote.  Click here to read the entire column.
